    Audiovisual translation and adaptation

What is translation and audiovisual adaptation about?

Audiovisual translation and adaptation is a transformation of what is seen and heard in an audiovisual project into the target language, i.e. an interaction that the interpreter must carry out between linguistic and non-linguistic signs.

The audiovisual translator has to be able to interpret the content from the original language to the target language in a consistent way, taking into account the person’s jargon, dramatic turns, scenes, colloquial expressions, etc.

Most of the audiovisual products we consume are processed by a dubbing service, but the consumption of these subtitled products is gaining ground.

Types of audiovisual translation and adaptation

    • Subtitling

Subtitling consists of conveying the audio of a video or other audiovisual product through texts located at the bottom part of the video.

This method offers many advantages as it is one of the cheapest and fastest, it offers continuous learning to learn other languages as well as improving reading comprehension, allows actors’ voices to be heard and helps people with hearing deficiencies to follow the storyline.

Netflix launches the program called Hermes to sign up professionals who demonstrate their ability to translate and adapt all types of series. Do you dare?

    • Dubbing

Dubbing is a technique used after the recording of a film, television or radio production, replacing the dialogues from the original language to the target language.

This method is common to market the audiovisual product at an international level.

    • Audio description

Audio description is an adaptation for blind people, that is, it allows visually impaired people to enjoy all kinds of audiovisual productions.

It does not consist of a simple translation, it is necessary to adapt it according to the intonation and speed of the audiovisual production so that it can be properly followed.

Transcription consists of putting into writing what has been viewed or heard from an audiovisual file into a text document.

Once the text is written, it is translated by an experienced professional translator.

This is an essential stage in the translation and audiovisual adaptation process, as it facilitates the work of the translators.
